Understanding Home Insurance

Picture

DID YOU KNOW?
Most standard homeowners insurance policies include four essential types of coverage:

Structure
This coverage will repair or rebuild your home if it is damaged or destroyed by:
Fire
Hurricane
Hail
Lightning
or Other Disasters listed in your policy**.

This can also cover detached structures such as a garage, shed or gazebo, but be sure to check with your agent about this.
.
**It will not pay for damage caused by a flood, earthquake or routine wear and tear.
"Purchasing enough coverage to rebuild your home is generally a good rule of thumb when buying coverage."
Belongings
Your furniture, clothes, sports equipment and other personal items are covered if they are stolen or destroyed by fire, hurricane or other insured disasters.
The coverage is generally 50 to 70% of the  insurance on the structure of your home.
Items stored off premises as well as trees and shrubs on the premises are covered, but there can be limits on these coverages so speak with your agent to better understand them.
High price items like jewelry, furs, art and collectibles are also covered, but often subject to dollar limits within your standard policy. To ensure these items are covered, you can purchase special endorsements or floaters to make up the difference.
The best way to be sure that all of your belongings are well insured is to conduct an inventory and estimate their overall value.

Liability
Liability covers you against lawsuits for bodily injury or property damage that you or family members cause to other people. It also pays for damage caused by your pets. So, if your son, daughter or dog accidentally ruins a neighbor’s expensive rug, you are covered. (However, if they destroy your own rug, you’re out of luck.)
The liability portion of your policy pays for both the cost of defending you in court and any court awards—up to the limit stated in your policy documents.
If you have significant assets and want more coverage than is available under your homeowners policy, consider purchasing  an umbrella or excess liability policy, which provides broader coverage, including claims against you for libel and slander, as well as higher liability limits.
Your policy also provides no-fault medical coverage, so if a friend or neighbor is injured in your home, he or she can simply submit medical bills to your insurance company. This way, expenses are paid without a liability claim being filed against you. Again, its does  NOT pay the medical bills for your own family or your pet.
Living Expenses
Additional Living Expenses or ALE pays the additional costs of living away from home if you cannot live there due to damage from a an insured disaster.
It covers hotel bills, restaurant meals and other costs, over and above your usual living expenses, incurred while your home is being rebuilt or repaired. Also if a portion of your home is rented out, ALE will cover the lost income from your tenant during this time.

Your ALE coverage limit is
separate from the amount available to rebuild or repair your home.  So your home will still be covered for your full policy amount, even if your ALE coverage runs out.

Keep in mind that the ALE coverage in your homeowners policy has limits, so please speak to your agent to understand what your limits might be.

Meet the Team: Get to know Tavis Cano

Tavis is a Fremont native who fell into the insurance industry when a spot became open at TWFG at the same time that he was searching for a new job. In the short time that he has been on the team he has  found that the realm of insurance is very interesting. Tavis has always enjoyed helping people, and insurance has provided an avenue to do this while being mentally stimulating at the same time.
Tavis works as a customer service representative,  servicing mostly commercial lines customers as well as handling the commercial certificate of insurance requests. He also helps with anything else that he can as he learns more and more about the insurance world.

"having such varied experience with all kinds of customers has given me the skills to be able to service all kinds of customers to the highest level of excellence."
Tavis is an excellent addition to the customer service art of our team because he comes to us bearing a wealth of experience in the customer service industry. Tavis has worked almost entirely in customer service for the past 7 years, spanning industries such as food service, food retail, medical, and education. Tavis says that, "having such varied experience with all kinds of customers has given me the skills to be able to service all kinds of customers to the highest level of excellence."
When Tavis isn't at the office he enjoys board games and on quiet evenings reading fiction and non-fiction books on a wide variety of subjects. Tavis also loves camping and any activities that take him outside.  Tavis' affinity for the outdoors can be partially attributed to the fact that he is an Eagle Scout. Aside from just learning how to make shelters, build fires, and tie knots,  becoming an Eagle Scout is a journey that takes years of dedication,  teaching scouts about hard work, and instilling in them valuable leadership skills. While we are excited to add Tavis' survival skills to our team, we are most excited for the Eagle scout skills that he will use in service to the customers here at TWFG. As an Eagle Scout and a dedicated TWFG team member, we know Tavis will work hard to give our customers the best service possible. That is why we are so excited to welcome him to our team!

Commercial General Liability Insurance

What You Should Know About Protecting Your Business

with Commercial General Liability Insurance

Picture
Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL) is often referred to as the "first line" of protection for commercial businesses. Why? CGL covers some of the most common risks that a business can face including:
  • Bodily Injury & Property Damage on the premises, operations, products, and completed operations
  • Advertising Liability and Personal Injury Liability
What do these things actually cover?

Bodily Injury & Property Damage
Imagine you own an ice cream shop and a young customer comes in, buys a cone, drops it, and proceeds to slip and fall on the mess. The young customer breaks their wrist in the process and since it happened in your shop, your business could be liable for the injury. Instead of pulling funds out of the cash register for the kid's medical bills, your CGL policy could cover you under bodily injury & property damage.
Advertising and Personal Injury Liability
You're still the owner of the ice cream shop and you decide to run a TV ad that unintentionally implies that your competitor's ice cream shop uses dairy from unhealthy cows to make their ice cream. Your competitor loses business and they sue for the personal damages that your ad caused them. Instead of settling the suit with your own money, you could be covered under Advertising and Personal Injury Liability.

If you are starting a business, or you're not sure if you currently have adequate coverage, call our office to discuss our many options for CGL .
Our team here at TWFG Insurance Services in Fremont works with dozens of carriers including, Travelers, Nationwide, Mercury, MetLife, Liberty Mutual and more so that we can find you the best insurance to protect your business.  We'll help you sort through all of the options and we're committed to helping you understand each part of your policy so that you can get the right policy at the right price, because Our Policy is Caring.
